Charting New Paths: The Trailblazers Program Welcomes a New Educator
Trailblazer: a person who is the leader in a particular field, especially who does a particular thing before anyone else does. The term Trailblazer in and of itself creates an environment where students have the opportunity to become leaders in the classroom and the communities in which they live. The vision for the Trailblazer program is to create a culture that transitions students from a fixed to growth mindset and instilling that belief within themselves that “they can do hard things” with just a little grit and perseverance! The first 9 weeks of school have been spent developing this culture that will be the catalyst for our future project-based learning. We want our students to find their place IN the classroom while creating unique learning opportunities that are outside of the box! This is fostered by not lowering expectations but meeting our students right where they are.
This year, the program welcomes a new teacher, Mrs. Jessica Salmon, at the forefront, but their motto stays unchanged: “We have trails to blaze.” With the support and encouragement of Mrs. Salmon and Mrs. Frazzitta, this incredible group of Trailblazers is going to do just that!

Career Ready: PCCSS' College and Career Academy
Did you know that Putnam County High School is a Georgia College & Career Academy? Putnam County’s College and Career Academy (PCCCA) provides students with opportunities to develop their academic knowledge, their technical skills, and their employability skills. All PCHS students have a number of opportunities to complete pathways in Advanced Academics, Career, Technical, & Agricultural Education, Fine Arts, while also participating in a Work-Based Learning Placement or Service Leadership.
The PCCCA’s goal is to ensure that every student graduates with a clear plan for success that aligns with realistic objectives. This looks different for each student, and school administers, teachers and counselors are all here to guide them as they navigate and prepare for the opportunities that lie ahead.
Support from businesses, industries, and the community is essential for our College and Career Academy’s success, as students need to acquire "real-world" experiences both inside and outside the classroom. The PCCCA has a fantastic Board of Directors comprised of key stakeholders who are actively engaged and invested in Putnam County’s teachers, programs, and students. This team understands the significance of connectivity and is devoted to fostering a stronger community. By collaborating with these partners, PCCCA is establishing a pipeline that equips Putnam County’s youth with a competitive advantage for their next life chapter, enabling them to earn not just high school credits, but also college credits and industry-recognized credentials.

"Literature and Learning: PCCSS’ Partnership with the Georgia Writers Museum"
The Putnam County Charter School System (PCCSS) is beyond #PutnamProud of our partnership with the Georgia Writers Museum (GWM). GWM is dedicated to nurturing and inspiring future generations of Georgia authors, and one of the ways they achieve this is by giving back to the students of Putnam County.
To the joy of our PCPS students, they have launched a “Storytime” program where museum representatives visit classrooms throughout the year to read children’s books authored by Georgia writers. GWM also organizes a highly popular “Spooky Story” contest for 3rd through 8th graders, motivating students to enhance their creative writing skills beyond the classroom. While this is a state-wide contest, we are pleased to share that Putnam County is consistently well represented, both in terms of submissions and among the winners. At our middle school, they have facilitated several “Meet the Author” and “Writing Workshop” events, which have proven beneficial for both enthusiastic writers and those who find it challenging to express themselves on paper. Each year, the museum also engages our high school’s Service Leadership class as their official Junior Board of Directors, providing students with a unique chance to plan a culminating project for their peers and the wider community. Previous boards have enjoyed considerable success with their “LIVE Bookfairs,” where books come to life, and “Meet Me at the Table” dinner parties that celebrate Georgia authors and their literary journeys.
In addition to their collaboration with PCCSS, the Georgia Writers Museum has something to offer everyone in the community. So, whether you're looking to hone your craft at one of their writing workshops, explore the latest True Crime case, meet your favorite Georgia author, find a quiet place to read, or simply explore the rich literary heritage of Georgia, the Georgia Writers Museum is definitely the place for you!

The Importance of the ESPLOST Vote for Putnam County Charter School System
As we approach the ballot this November, it's crucial for the community to understand the significance of the ESPLOST vote. While we are not here to tell anyone how to vote, we want to highlight the immense value that the ESPLOST penny tax holds for the Putnam County Charter School System (PCCSS).
A Legacy of Enhancements
Over the past 24 years, the ESPLOST funds have been instrumental in transforming our school system. These funds have allowed us to:
Enhance Safety and Security: Implementing measures to protect our students and staff.
Construct New Buildings: Providing modern and spacious environments conducive to learning.
Renovate Existing Structures: Ensuring our facilities remain safe and up-to-date.
Upgrade Technology: Equipping our students and staff with the latest technological tools to enhance education.
Improve Transportation: Ensuring safe and efficient transportation for our students.
Continuation, Not a New Tax
One of the most important messages we want to convey is that this is not a new tax. The ESPLOST is simply a continuation of the current penny tax that has been in place since it was first approved in 2000. This means no additional tax burden on the community; it merely extends the existing support that has been vital to our school system's success.
Alleviating Financial Strain
The ESPLOST is designed to help PCCSS manage its budget effectively. By supporting this penny tax, we can keep our budget at a manageable rate and reduce the financial burden on local homeowners. This is a community effort to ensure our schools remain well-funded and capable of providing top-notch education.
Your Awareness Matters
As we near the vote, please understand the profound impact that your decision will have on our schools and community. The ESPLOST funds have been a cornerstone of our development and will continue to be essential for our future growth and stability.
Thank you for taking the time to learn about the significance of the ESPLOST vote.

Summer Scholars: PCCSS' College Experiences
This is Season 4 Episode 2 of the Putnam Proud Podcast.
During this summer, scholars from PCMS and PCHS embarked on an educational journey to three different college campuses to immerse themselves in the "College Life" for a week. They stayed in dormitories, ate in cafeterias, and deepened their knowledge of admission criteria, time management, and financial literacy. The Albany State University (ASU), Oxford College of Emory University, and Davidson College Summer Promise programs were aimed at giving rising 9th graders to seniors a taste of college life to boost their confidence and interest in staying committed to high school and pursuing higher education.
Each campus experience was unique, offering various activities tailored to the location and community. For instance, students at the Oxford Summer Experience participated in STEAM labs, life skills workshops, and college and career readiness sessions. Meanwhile, at ASU, scholars delved into subjects such as Industrial Engineering, Ergonomics, Physics, Mathematics, and Writing. The scholars also visited educational sites like the Albany Civil Rights Museum, the Riverquarium, Thronateeska, Chehaw Park and Zoo, and Jimmy's Hot Dogs, linked to the Albany Civil Rights Movement.
The programs concluded with parents and school leaders visiting the universities to witness the students' presentations on their week-long learning experiences. These summer initiatives aimed to foster enduring relationships between university faculty, PCHS staff, students, and families. We are #PutnamProud of these opportunities and look forward to continuing to offer them to our students in the future.

Transforming School Nutrition Bite by Bite.
This is Season 4 Episode 1 of the Putnam Proud Podcast.
The Putnam County Charter School System (PCCSS) Nutrition Department could easily be considered the largest "restaurant" in the county, serving nearly 800,000 meals a year. What continues to set the nutrition department apart from other dining establishments in the area is that every meal is FREE, thanks to the Community Eligibility Program (CEP). This initiative ensures that every student has access to nutritious meals at no charge, a critical support as some form of food insecurity continues to affect many families. With breakfast and lunch freely available, PCCSS helps guarantee that students can focus on their education without the distraction of hunger.
The dedicated staff within the PCCSS Nutrition Department goes beyond merely preparing food; they craft a wholesome and engaging dining experience for over 3,000 students. Each day, in the four school kitchens, meals are prepared from scratch. This dedication to fresh, homemade cooking allows the staff to get creative with their offerings. From heartwarming home-cooked meals and diverse salad bars to inventive in-house prepared Lunchables and build-your-own bars, the emphasis is on providing variety and quality. The nutrition staff takes immense pride in their work, understanding the significant impact that nutritious meals have on the students' overall well-being and academic performance.
The PCCSS nutrition program has recently embraced the Farm-to-School movement, a forward-thinking initiative aimed at providing students with the freshest and most nutritious food possible. By integrating hydroponic farms within each school, students now benefit from consuming vegetables and herbs grown right on the premises. This method ensures that the food is not only fresh but also free from harmful pesticides and long transportation times, which can diminish nutritional value. The fresh produce is incorporated into weekly wellness classes led by Nutrition Director Teena Carr, allowing students to explore new foods and gain insights into some of the different ways food can be grown. In addition to the hydroponic farms, Mrs. Carr has taken another significant step towards local food sourcing by introducing beef cattle to the school grounds. The cattle will be raised on-site and utilized as a fresh source of protein for the students in the future. This initiative is expected to provide high-quality beef, while also allowing students to witness the complete farm-to-table process, fostering a greater appreciation for where their food comes from, and the effort involved in its production.
At the heart of it all, the children are the top priority for the cafeteria staff. The commitment to early mornings and the rigorous effort put into meal preparation are all worthwhile when they witness the joy and satisfaction of a child enjoying their meal. The genuine smiles and occasional requests for seconds are rewarding affirmations of their hard work. In this way, the PCCSS Nutrition Department not only fulfills a fundamental need but also fosters a nurturing and supportive school environment, ensuring that every child is well-fed and ready to learn.

Psych'ed About Putnam: PCCSS School Psychologists in Focus.
On Putnam Proud today, Superintendent Eric Arena talks with PCCSS school psychologists - Megan Teipel, Raina Collins, and Ashley Kilebrew.
School psychologists play a crucial role in the educational system by supporting students' academic success, mental health, and overall well-being. They work closely with students, teachers, and parents to provide a range of services, including counseling, assessment of learning disabilities, and intervention for behavioral issues. School psychologists also collaborate with other professionals to create a positive and inclusive learning environment for all students. Their dedication and expertise help ensure that every student has the opportunity to thrive and succeed in school.
PCCSS's commitment to fostering a supportive educational environment is reflected in the decision to allocate space for three school psychologists within the district. This strategic move underscores a deep understanding of the multifaceted value school psychologists bring to the educational landscape. School psychologists are not just counselors; they are integral in creating a bridge between the mental well-being of students and their academic success. Their expertise in both education and psychology positions them uniquely to assess and address a variety of student needs, including learning difficulties, emotional challenges, and behavioral concerns.
Awesome conversation!

Beyond the Blackboard: Stories from PCCSS' "Teacher Chats". This is season 3 episode 10 of the Putnam Proud Podcast featuring Superintendent Eric Arena talking with Denise Billue - ESOL teacher, Amy Kennedy - high school counselor, and Ashlyn Grantham - 4th grade teacher.
"Teacher Chats" is an initiative launched by the PCCSS administration several years ago, aimed at fostering a supportive and collaborative environment for educators, especially those in their first-year teaching at PCCSS. This program is designed to open a dialogue between the administration and first-year teachers, which encompasses both educators new to the profession and those who are new to the district. By inviting these teachers to the Board office for a candid discussion about their experiences, the initiative seeks to accomplish several objectives that are critical to both teacher satisfaction and student success.
One of the key strengths of the "Teacher Chats" is its focus on feedback. For teachers who are just beginning their careers, this platform offers a unique opportunity to voice their feelings regarding the support they receive, pinpointing areas where the district excels and identifying opportunities for further improvement. This feedback is invaluable, as it not only aids in the professional growth and confidence of new teachers but also contributes to the creation of a nurturing and effective educational setting. For teachers who have experience in other districts, "Teacher Chats" provides a forum to share insights and best practices from their previous positions, offering strategic advice that can help PCCSS enhance its educational strategies.
Ultimately, these “chats” represent a significant step forward in building a positive work culture within the PCCSS district. We are confident that this approach not only benefits our teachers, by ensuring they feel supported and valued, but it also has a profound impact on our students, who are the ultimate beneficiaries of a motivated, inspired, and well-supported teaching staff. It is our hope that the ongoing dialogue fostered by "Teacher Chats" will showcase PCCSS’ dedication to creating an environment where staff can thrive, and students can excel.
