The Importance of the ESPLOST Vote for Putnam County Charter School System
As we approach the ballot this November, it's crucial for the community to understand the significance of the ESPLOST vote. While we are not here to tell anyone how to vote, we want to highlight the immense value that the ESPLOST penny tax holds for the Putnam County Charter School System (PCCSS).
 
A Legacy of Enhancements
Over the past 24 years, the ESPLOST funds have been instrumental in transforming our school system. These funds have allowed us to:
Enhance Safety and Security: Implementing measures to protect our students and staff.
Construct New Buildings: Providing modern and spacious environments conducive to learning.
Renovate Existing Structures: Ensuring our facilities remain safe and up-to-date.
Upgrade Technology: Equipping our students and staff with the latest technological tools to enhance education.
Improve Transportation: Ensuring safe and efficient transportation for our students.
Continuation, Not a New Tax
One of the most important messages we want to convey is that this is not a new tax. The ESPLOST is simply a continuation of the current penny tax that has been in place since it was first approved in 2000. This means no additional tax burden on the community; it merely extends the existing support that has been vital to our school system's success.
 
Alleviating Financial Strain
The ESPLOST is designed to help PCCSS manage its budget effectively. By supporting this penny tax, we can keep our budget at a manageable rate and reduce the financial burden on local homeowners. This is a community effort to ensure our schools remain well-funded and capable of providing top-notch education.
 
Your Awareness Matters
As we near the vote, please understand the profound impact that your decision will have on our schools and community. The ESPLOST funds have been a cornerstone of our development and will continue to be essential for our future growth and stability.

Summer Scholars: PCCSS' College Experiences
This is Season 4 Episode 2 of the Putnam Proud Podcast.
 
During this summer, scholars from PCMS and PCHS embarked on an educational journey to three different college campuses to immerse themselves in the "College Life" for a week. They stayed in dormitories, ate in cafeterias, and deepened their knowledge of admission criteria, time management, and financial literacy. The Albany State University (ASU), Oxford College of Emory University, and Davidson College Summer Promise programs were aimed at giving rising 9th graders to seniors a taste of college life to boost their confidence and interest in staying committed to high school and pursuing higher education.
 
Each campus experience was unique, offering various activities tailored to the location and community. For instance, students at the Oxford Summer Experience participated in STEAM labs, life skills workshops, and college and career readiness sessions. Meanwhile, at ASU, scholars delved into subjects such as Industrial Engineering, Ergonomics, Physics, Mathematics, and Writing. The scholars also visited educational sites like the Albany Civil Rights Museum, the Riverquarium, Thronateeska, Chehaw Park and Zoo, and Jimmy's Hot Dogs, linked to the Albany Civil Rights Movement.
 
The programs concluded with parents and school leaders visiting the universities to witness the students' presentations on their week-long learning experiences. These summer initiatives aimed to foster enduring relationships between university faculty, PCHS staff, students, and families. We are #PutnamProud of these opportunities and look forward to continuing to offer them to our students in the future.

Transforming School Nutrition Bite by Bite.
This is Season 4 Episode 1 of the Putnam Proud Podcast.
 
The Putnam County Charter School System (PCCSS) Nutrition Department could easily be considered the largest "restaurant" in the county, serving nearly 800,000 meals a year. What continues to set the nutrition department apart from other dining establishments in the area is that every meal is FREE, thanks to the Community Eligibility Program (CEP). This initiative ensures that every student has access to nutritious meals at no charge, a critical support as some form of food insecurity continues to affect many families. With breakfast and lunch freely available, PCCSS helps guarantee that students can focus on their education without the distraction of hunger.
 
The dedicated staff within the PCCSS Nutrition Department goes beyond merely preparing food; they craft a wholesome and engaging dining experience for over 3,000 students. Each day, in the four school kitchens, meals are prepared from scratch. This dedication to fresh, homemade cooking allows the staff to get creative with their offerings. From heartwarming home-cooked meals and diverse salad bars to inventive in-house prepared Lunchables and build-your-own bars, the emphasis is on providing variety and quality. The nutrition staff takes immense pride in their work, understanding the significant impact that nutritious meals have on the students' overall well-being and academic performance.
 
The PCCSS nutrition program has recently embraced the Farm-to-School movement, a forward-thinking initiative aimed at providing students with the freshest and most nutritious food possible. By integrating hydroponic farms within each school, students now benefit from consuming vegetables and herbs grown right on the premises. This method ensures that the food is not only fresh but also free from harmful pesticides and long transportation times, which can diminish nutritional value. The fresh produce is incorporated into weekly wellness classes led by Nutrition Director Teena Carr, allowing students to explore new foods and gain insights into some of the different ways food can be grown. In addition to the hydroponic farms, Mrs. Carr has taken another significant step towards local food sourcing by introducing beef cattle to the school grounds. The cattle will be raised on-site and utilized as a fresh source of protein for the students in the future. This initiative is expected to provide high-quality beef, while also allowing students to witness the complete farm-to-table process, fostering a greater appreciation for where their food comes from, and the effort involved in its production.
 
At the heart of it all, the children are the top priority for the cafeteria staff. The commitment to early mornings and the rigorous effort put into meal preparation are all worthwhile when they witness the joy and satisfaction of a child enjoying their meal. The genuine smiles and occasional requests for seconds are rewarding affirmations of their hard work. In this way, the PCCSS Nutrition Department not only fulfills a fundamental need but also fosters a nurturing and supportive school environment, ensuring that every child is well-fed and ready to learn.

After nearly three decades in education, with the last 12 years dedicated to serving as superintendent of the Putnam County Charter School System, Mr. Eric Arena is retiring.
 
Throughout his tenure, Mr. Arena has embodied the principle, "If it benefits our children, then let's go for it!" His unwavering commitment to the students and the community has driven his every decision, always prioritizing their best interests. His presence has been one of relentless advocacy, ensuring that every child in Putnam County received the same educational opportunities as those in larger districts, even if it meant personally bridging gaps to make it happen.
 
Mr. Arena's leadership has been characterized by his steadfast dedication and unwavering passion for quality and innovative education. His approach was never passive; he actively sought out ways to enhance the educational experience for every student. Whether it was implementing new programs, securing funding, or advocating for policy changes, his efforts were always directed at creating a nurturing and enriching environment for learning. One of the key strengths of the "Teacher Chats" is its focus on feedback. For teachers who are just beginning their careers, this platform offers a unique opportunity to voice their feelings regarding the support they receive, pinpointing areas where the district excels and identifying opportunities for further improvement. This feedback is invaluable, as it not only aids in the professional growth and confidence of new teachers but also contributes to the creation of a nurturing and effective educational setting. In the previous episode of the Putnam Pieces videocast, viewers learned about REACH Georgia, a needs-based scholarship program that supports students from 8th grade through graduation. The program offers mentorship, academic coaching, and requires scholars to maintain a 2.5 GPA, positive behavior, and good attendance to receive a $10,000 scholarship. By promoting academic and personal growth, it instills success habits and provides a pathway to higher education.
In the latest episode of the Putnam Proud Podcast, listeners will be introduced to Tyquillious Mahone, a 2021 PCHS graduate and a successful REACH Scholar. Tyquillious will share how the program supported him during high school and prepared him for his future at South Georgia Tech and in the military. The podcast will cover Tyquillious' experiences with Central Georgia Technical College (CGTC) through PCHS and his passion for automotive mechanics, which led him to pursue a Motor Sports degree at South Georgia Tech. His insights and expectations as he embarks on his new journey with the United States Air Force will also be shared. Tyquillious' accomplishments make us extremely proud, and we eagerly anticipate what the future holds for him!

Last year was the first year of The War Eagle Games. This event is for the local special needs children to participate in competitive sports. The children get to experience the fun of competing and having others cheer them on to finish. The event is inspiring to all. This year the 2nd Annual War Eagle Games will be on Friday, March 22nd, 2024 - 9AM to 12:30 PM at War Eagle Stadium. The event is free. Let's fill the stands with positive energy! Mr. Eric Arena (Superintendent of PCCSS) talks with Tiera Bowen, Roger Parham, and Dr. Mollie Jones about the War Eagle Games. Tiera is the Special Programs Director, Roger is an adaptive PE teacher, and Mollie is a PE teacher and coach. They discuss how the event came to be and what happens at the games. They also share their thoughts about the excitement and the impact of the event on the kids as well as those spectators attending.
